Business Networking

Now that you've started a business, what's next? Getting the word out!

So....what is business networking? Unless you've participated in a networking event before, no doubt you have questions.  Business networking is simply introducing yourself to other business professionals. In today’s business world, particularly small to medium sized businesses, networking in person is vital for success; yet many businesses fail to understand the value of networking and the business connections/friendships that can be made.

Business networking representatives typically meet weekly to exchange business cards, perfect elevator speeches, and gain knowledge to provide reputable referrals. That brings us to another question. What is an elevator speech? I'm glad you asked. An elevator speech is a 60 second overview about your company, the product or service you provide and what type of business is a good referral for you. Again, remember, networking is never a direct sales campaign; networking is all about referrals and business relationships.

All business networking groups are NOT alike. Some networking groups are free to attend and have few rules and restrictions. Other groups may charge membership fees, mandated attendance requirements, and more. Again, test the waters, before jumping in with both feet. Visit a number of groups and see which one is the best fit with your product, service and schedule. While business networking is vital, it is important to remember that time is money and belonging to several groups can be counterproductive. Choose wisely.

Social media networking provides a platform to share expertise and knowledge but lacks personal connection. Social media should never be used as a direct sales pitch. Never connect with someone and immediately send a message or call your new connection about purchasing your product or service. This is unprofessional, ineffective and can negatively impact the reputation of you and the company you represent.

Sharing posts via social media is a great way to increase your online visibility; however, sharing industry information, written by another company only serves to direct web traffic to their website, not to your website. Take time to create and develop your own industry business blog platform to share tips, information and route traffic to your website.

Networking is an obvious fit for B2B companies but is often overlooked by B2C businesses and non-profit organizations. This is a huge mistake as business owners are also consumers, volunteers and donors.

Now it's time to get out of your comfort zone and get started networking.
