A BREAD FAMILY CHRISTMAS

What? You have never heard the story of the Bread Family Christmas?  Oh my, it's time to grab a cup of hot cocoa, sit back and listen close while I share with you one of the most delicious stories never told.

Our little story began a very long time ago. Although very little is known about the origin of the Bread Family, their ancestry can be traced all the way back to the days of Moses and the leavened lineage of the Manna’s.

A long time ago on Christmas Eve, the wind was howling, snow was falling, and the temperature dipped below zero. Yes, it was a very, very cold. The hustle, bustle and anxiety season seemed to be in full swing. Corn & Ginger Bread were busily preparing for their annual Bread Family Christmas celebration. There was always too much to do and too little time to do it until holiday guests arrived. This year was not any different.

Corn & Ginger Bread were blessed with six little muffins, Blueberry, Banana Nut, English, Chocolate Chip, Bran and Pumpkin. Each one sporting unique personalities, it was hard to believe they were made from the same batch.

Blueberry was often sad; however, she never ceased to leave an imprint on the lives she touched. Banana Nut was the comedian of the family. He loved to tell jokes but had a tough time keeping it all together. Next in line was little Miss English, with her split personality and sense of humor to match, she posed quite the challenge. Not to be outdone, Chocolate Chip was certainly a chip off the 'ol block. He was loved by everyone he met and sweet as could be. Following the line-up was Bran, nicknamed "the peacemaker” because she always tried to avoid confusion and much preferred everything to run smooth. Last but not least, the baby of the family, little Pumpkin. She added just a touch of spice to round out the warmth.

It was Christmas Eve and excitement was in the air for the little muffins. You see, they were anxiously awaiting the arrival of well… you know who? For Corn and Ginger, the enthusiasm just wasn't there. The year had been rough. Corn had been stressed for weeks as the heat seemed to be increasing with the troubled economy. The stress of raisin six little muffins was ongoing. Day after day, Cornbread rolled to the factory because his family kneaded the dough. Yes, times were difficult for the Bread family. They were forced to cut back and tighten their belts (or at least they tried too).

Nevertheless, Christmas Eve wasn't the time to dwell on the negative, it was a time of celebration. Bran often reminded the family that "this too shall pass". It was true, the Bread family was resilient. Through it all, Ginger Bread never seemed worried or overly concerned. She always continued with her sweet personality, smiling through the worst of times. Inside the little canister they called a house, Ginger Bread always made everyone feel a little bit better. She could always transform a bad day into a good one.

Knowing that everyone would be up late, Ginger made sure the little muffins got a quick nap so they would be wide awake for the evening festivities. After a couple of hours, Ginger sang, “rise and shine”.  It was difficult waking up the little muffins as they seemed to be stuck in the warmth of their surroundings, but with a little bit of careful nudging, they were soon ready to greet everyone.

Time passed quickly and Corn Bread's stress intensified knowing the In-Loaves would soon be arriving.  Corn Bread dreaded the In Loaves and their rye sense of humor. Most of the time they ended up behaving like heels. Before Corn Bread could end his thought, they were at the door and just like that, the annual tradition was underway. Breads from all over the country began arriving from yeast to west and everywhere in-between. Aunt Éclair traveled all the way from France, followed by Cousin Pita from Greece. Uncle Crumpet wasn't far behind. Uncle Crumpet always made Ginger Bread a little nervous because he was always a little half baked

As the family gathered together, laughter consumed the atmosphere and all worries seemed to disappear. Corn and Ginger’s house was filled with love. The family hovered around the oven anticipating the event of the year. Anticipation was rising, as the clock ticked ever so slowly. You might even say that the little muffins were almost crumbling with excitement!

Suddenly.......a loud POP was heard outside the little house. The Bread's grew silent. They knew it was time!

It was the moment they had been waiting for!  Yes, there he was, easily identifiable by his characteristic hat, shirt, and no pants ensemble, delivering goodies, fresh from the oven.  His giggles were endless as he finished his work, he spoke not a word, then grinned with a smirk. Soon out the door, other Mufffins were waiting, he had to get going, no hesitating. But they heard him exclaim as he soared out of sight, Happy Baking to all and to all a good night!
